Hundred years ago, herbal skin care was quite the only way to take care of the skin. These days, herbal skin care routines have been replaced by synthetic and chemically based skin care routines. Skin care products range from basic moisturizers and detergents to specialty products that promise to reduce wrinkles, reduce fine lines and revive skin to give you a more youthful look. The question is how safe are all of these chemicals we put in and on our bodies every day and what can we do?

Natural ingredients are known for their cleaning properties, antiseptic properties and moisturizing abilities. Things like aloe, camomile and rosemary are known to be good cleansers. Lavender, thyme and fennel are large antiseptics and tones. Tea tree oil, beeswax and cocoa butter are commonly known as moisturizers.

Aloe is also available in many shampoos, soaps, sunscreens, skin creams and other cosmetics used to calm, heal, protect and moisturize the skin. Aloe Vera lotion is often used to cleanse the skin. Many of the skin care products containing aloe vera are also enhanced with vitamin E and collagen to maintain skin's elasticity and lock moisture.

Chamomile is an ideal ingredient for the treatment of acne, irritation, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, hypersensitive skin and allergic conditions. Chamomile oil also has good wound healing properties. Using chamomile helps to reduce puffiness, clear the pores of contamination and help reduce redness of the skin.

Rosemary oil helps to clean and rejuvenate oily and dull skin. Popular in anti-aging creams, it has excellent toning effects on loose, sagging skin, and helps to increase blood flow which, in turn, promotes healthy skin function. Timjan is considered an excellent antioxidant, astringent and an advantageous ingredient to improve skin tone. Its also a powerful antifungal and antiviral used to keep the skin free of fungi and viruses.

Fennel oil is used for soothing, cleansing and toning of the skin, while improving circulation and fighting fluid retention and puffiness.

Rose extract and rose oil are good for promoting a youthful skin with good tone, elasticity and even color.

Tea Tree Oil can be used to fight and clean up acne, skin damage and stains, cold wounds, athletes, tan, mumps and infections, while also sighing the irritated and inflamed skin.

Witchhasel helps to control water loss, is a good contraction, an antioxidant and helps to reduce skin redness.

Avocado oil is easily absorbed by the skin and used as a plasticizer. Its hydrating properties make it ideal for dry, dehydrated or older skin. Avocado oil is also used to relieve dryness and itching of psoriasis and eczema.

Beeswax is a thickener, emulsifier and wetting agent. It has wonderful softening, soothing and softening properties and helps the skin to maintain moisture.
