Community Transport
The City of Port Phillip (in Melbourne) has extended its free community bus service. The buses are available for everyone but are timetabled to mostly suit local elderly people. Special buses have been designed for easy access and adapted for wheel chair loading. The drivers have an understanding of (and empathy for) those with mobility issues. Deputy Mayor Janet Bolitho noted that some people regularly catch the bus for the sake of something to do. It fulfils a role beyond transporting people from point to point. Community transport provides local services and is also an important link to the standard transit systems.
