Model - Aurora, Epping North

Posted in Models, Policies by Ferne Edwards on July 3rd, 2007

Aurora is a planned residential community in Epping North, Melbourne, designed by VicUrban. It’s has been designed to promote harmony between the needs of the environment and the need for a more rewarding, modern lifestyle.

Design aspects include:
Walkability - walking distance between the home, neighbourhood shops, schools, public transport and vast parklands; and
Clean and green living. See below for more details on sustainable features at Aurora.

WATER
As part of the Aurora street network, grass swales have been integrated to slow down water runoff, allowing seepage into the ground and filtering out pollutants.
Every house at Aurora is anticipated to have recycled water for toilet flushing and outdoor use in 2008.
ENERGY
6 Star energy-rated homes
4-5 star appliances
Solar hot water systems
Solar energy in Aurora Park
WASTE
Up to 95% of construction waste at Aurora will be diverted from landfill for processing.
BIODIVERSITY
Over 20% of Aurora’s 630 hectare development is dedicated to parkland and conservation areas.

See the VicUrban website for more details about the Aurora site.

I have known about this development for some time now as I live within its vicinity. This post prompted me to check it out earlier today in greater detail. It is still in an early stage, with only a sparse collection of competed houses and some undeveloped sections, though things look good.

That an array of important sustainability issues has been addressed is very welcome, especially since it is located in a semi-rural area that I environmentally hold dear.

Aurora itself is part of the expanding urban development occurring on the fringes of Melbourne’s north in Epping and it seems to be the most sustainability-conscious.
