CALL FOR NOMINATIONS – UNAA 2013 WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY AWARDS

Nominations for the 2013 World Environment Day Awards are NOW OPEN

This year we are pleased to announce the two new Prime Minister’s Awards and the Swinburne University of Technology Award (see below).

Businesses, local governments, community organisations, individuals, schools and the media are invited to nominate in the following Award categories:

  • *New* Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year Award (Entry Deadline Monday 22 April)
  • *New* Prime Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year Award (Entry Deadline Monday 22 April)
  • *New* Swinburne University of Technology Excellence in Sustainable Product Design Award
  • NSW Office of Environment and Heritage Sustainability Leadership Awards
  • Virgin Australia Community Award
  • Biodiversity Award
  • Business Awards
  • Environmental School Award
  • Excellence in Sustainable Water Management Award
  • Green Building Award
  • Local Government Awards
  • Media Award for Environmental Reporting

Nominations close on Monday, 22 April for the two Prime Minister’s Awards – For all other categories nominations close Wednesday 1, May 2013.

Winners will be announced at the Awards Presentation Dinner to be held on Friday, 7 June 2013 at the Park Hyatt Melbourne.

UNAA World Environment Day Awards 2012: Nominations Now Open

Each year, in support of United Nations World Environment Day (June 5), the United Nations Association of Australia recognises innovative and outstanding environmental initiatives and projects from across Australia through the World Environment Day Awards.  The Awards invite nominations from individuals, organisations and businesses that have taken positive steps towards sustainability and demonstrated environmental excellence in their homes, schools, communities and workplaces.

In 2012, the Awards are held in support of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for all and United Nations World Environment Day 2012 ‘Green Economy: Does it include you?’.

The 2012 Award Categories are:

  • Biodiversity Award
  • BHP Billiton Business Awards
  • Virgin Australia Community Award
  • Environmental School Award
  • Excellence in Marine and Coastal Management Award
  • Excellence in Sustainable Water Management Award
  • Green Building Award
  • Individual Award for Outstanding Service to the Environment
  • Local Government Awards
  • Media Award for Environmental Reporting
  • Peter Szental Award for Sustainability Entrepreneurship

  • Peter Szental Award for Sustainability Entrepreneurship
  • Virgin Blue Business Awards
  • Department of Sustainability and Environment Biodiversity Award
  • Green Building Award
  • Local Government Awards
  • Excellence in Sustainable Water Management
  • Environmental Schools Award
  • Sustainability Education Award
  • Excellence in Marine and Coastal Management Award
  • Media Award for Environmental Reporting
  • Community Award
  • Individual Award

This National Awards Program recognises those from all Australian sectors who display innovation and dedication in their work to protect, manage or restore the environment. In recent years, the World Environment Day Awards have showcased some of the most important and exciting environmental projects in Australia. The Awards program encourages environmental leadership, and promotes awareness of environmental issues on a global scale. The Association is pleased to announce a new award this year, the Peter Szental Award for Sustainability Entrepreneurship. This Award recognises businesses that have been outstanding in commercialising new sustainability solutions, demonstrating new business models and influencing mainstream thinking. The World Environment Day Awards are held annually in support of UN World Environment Day on June 5th.

Nominations close Friday 6 May, 2011.

Winners will be announced at the Awards Presentation Dinner to be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Friday 3 June, 2011.

UNAA World Environment Day Awards 2010

The United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) is a non-profit, non-government organization dedicated to promoting the objectives of the United Nations through its World Environment Day Awards, Media Peace Awards and Model United Nations Education Program.  The annual World Environment Day Awards were established by the Association in 2000. The Awards seek to focus community attention on the environment, and in particular on positive programs that are working towards protecting or restoring the world’s natural heritage.  Each year, the United Nations selects a theme for World Environment Day. This year has been declared as the International Year of Biodiversity and global citizens are urged to take action to safeguard the variety of life on earth.

You can take action and get involved by nominating for the World Environment Day Awards in 2010. There are a broad range of award categories providing opportunities for businesses, local governments, schools, community groups, individuals and the media to gain recognition for their environmental initiatives and achievements. Categories include:

Master Class with Dr. Wendy Sarkissian on World Environment Day

On World Environment Day (5 June), the Victoria Local Government Agency (VLGA) will be hosting three master classes with planner, sustainability practitioner and co-author of the new book Kitchen Table Sustainability, Dr. Wendy Sarkissian.

This new ground-breaking book presents a model that demonstrates how building community trust and capacity and bringing the whole sustainability debate down to our kitchen tables, empowers both community members and those who work with them to bring about transformative change.
