Water Sensitive Cities: Winter School
Posted in Events, Research by Kate Archdeacon on May 25th, 2011
| 11 July , 2011 9:00 am | to | 15 July , 2011 5:30 pm |

The Water Sensitive Cities Winter School is a unique opportunity to hear from Australia’s leading researchers and thought-leaders on key actions in delivering water sensitive and liveable cities. Lectures and workshops will present latest solutions and concepts on required technologies for stormwater treatment, urban design and modelling, climate change adaptation, behavioural change, and social and government engagement. These cross disciplinary topics will all be linked to broader urban sustainability issues and lessons from the international community.
Many of today’s societal challenges may be classified as wicked problems where it is often inappropriate to reduce these problems to a perceived single dimension for which a solution is developed. The perceptions of the causes of these challenges differ from one discipline to another and yet they are all relevant. We now recognise the complex dynamics of the socio-technical dimensions of challenges we face today and our cities are expressions of our efforts in solving many of these wicked problems. Water management in our cities plays a key role in defining and shaping our cities’ future prosperity and well-being, as almost every aspect of our urban environment and quality of life is affected by the way we manage urban water.
Visit the Water Sensitive Cities program for the brochure, or Clearwater to register for the event.
Early Bird Registration closes May 31.

Vertical Gardens Made From Pallets
Posted in Models, Visions by Kate Archdeacon on May 16th, 2011

From How to Turn a Pallet into a Garden from Life on The Balcony:
[...]
Find A Pallet
The first thing you need to do is–obviously–find a pallet. I’ve had good luck finding them in dumpsters behind supermarkets. No need to be squeamish. It doesn’t smell. At least, it doesn’t smell that bad.
Don’t just take the first pallet you find. You’re looking for one with all the boards in good condition, no nails sticking out, no rotting, etc. If you intend to put edibles in your pallet, be sure to find one that was heat treated as opposed to fumigated with pesticides.
Collect Your Supplies
For this project, you’ll need the pallet you found, 2 large bags of potting soil, 16 six packs of annual flowers (one six pack per opening on the face of the pallet, and two six packs per opening on the top of the completed pallet garden), a small roll of landscape fabric, a staple gun, staples, and sand paper.

Liveable & Just Toolkit: Regional Workshops
Posted in Events, Research by Kate Archdeacon on May 6th, 2011
| 12 May , 2011 | to | 17 June , 2011 |
Source: Victorian Local Governance Association via Mt Alexander Sustainability Group Inc (MASG)

The Liveable & Just Toolkit is the culmination of a project to explore how local governments across Victoria are responding to the social and equity impacts of climate change.
In June 2009 the Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) and Melbourne University’s McCaughey Centre travelled across the state to hear directly from local governments about issues of priority, success stories, challenges, and lessons learned in addressing the social and equity impacts of climate change. Workshops covered crucial issues such as heatwaves and bushfires, rising costs of water, energy and transport, physical and mental health, and the heightened vulnerability of groups such as the mentally ill, homeless, aged, and infants. In response to workshop outcomes and recommendations, the Liveable & Just Toolkit provides a practical framework to help integrate responses to the social and equity impacts of climate change across council activities. It also presents ideas and suggestions for local government to respond to climate change in ways that simultaneously promote social justice.
Toolkits available for download from the website:
- Addressing social and equity impacts of climate change: The case for local government action
- Reducing vulnerability: Strategies for local government to identify and help reduce vulnerability to climate change
- Engaging communities: Tips for effective and inclusive climate change community engagement
- Building resilience: Ideas for local government to strengthen community resilience to climate change
The toolkit is designed for use by those in roles of varying seniority within the local government sphere and across a range of council activities including sustainability, health and wellbeing, economic and community development, and planning. The toolkit will also be highly relevant to community organisations working alongside or in direct partnership with local governments.
Visit the website for more information on the toolkit.
