On Sunday 8th September, Sustainable House Day will be celebrating its 12th year. The event will continue to showcase some of Australia’s most sustainable homes to the public as millions of Australians continue to embrace renewable energy, recycling, and other practices suitable to their lifestyles.

150 private houses and display houses featuring a variety of sustainable ideas will open their doors to the public. Homes are open from 10am-4pm and will be showcasing environmentally sustainable design, innovative use of materials, and homes that have invested in renewable energy, recycling and other sustainable living practices. Homes will feature experts in areas of green living and energy-efficient products.

Building an Outstanding Green Home: Free Online Seminar

Learn what went into building and designing a new 9.1-star home in Melbourne’s north at a free webinar held by the Alternative Technology Association (ATA).

The webinar will be at 11am on Wednesday, February 29, with Jeremy Spencer of green design and build firm Positive Footprints and the owner of the Preston home, Elizabeth Wheeler.  Passive solar design and sustainable material choice will be two of the items discussed.  It will finish with a Q&A session.

The webinar will be the second in a series of free online presentations by the ATA in conjunction with bankmecu, sharing practical knowledge about energy efficiency, sustainable building and water conservation at home. Webinars are broadcast live for view over your web browser, and will be available for playback on demand afterwards.

Earthship Biotecture Seminar Melbourne: “Sustainable Autonomy for Everyone” S.A.F.E.

An Earthship is a radically sustainable home made of recycled materials.

This three day Earthship Biotecture Seminar will be led by Earthship creator Michael Reynolds and cover a wide range of Earthship topics both pragmatic and philosophical.
Guest appearance and presentation by Martin Freney, PhD Candidate School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design University of Adelaide. Martin Freney will present scientific data to substantiate Earthship performance. Attendees achieve credit toward the Australian Earthship Biotecture Academy.

  • 2:00pm – 5:00pm  Solar/Thermal dynamics: discussion/presentation of how the Earthships heat and cool themselves and how this is integrated with the structure and climate.

Saturday February 18th

  • 10:00am – 12:00pm Custom Earthships: discussion/presentation on custom Earthships and how to design them.
  • 2:00pm – 5:00pm  Earthship Systems: discussion/presentation of specific details of the Earthship Systems independent power, water, sewage and food production.

Sunday February 19th

  • 10:00am – 12:30pm  Earthship Disaster Relief projects around the world discussion/presentation of how Earthships are evolved by? these projects.
  • 1:00pm – 3:00pm  Types of Earthships – discussion/presentation of the various types of Earthships and how to get started on your own.

Sustainable House Day 2011

Sustainable House Day, Sunday 11th September, will be celebrating its 10th year, the event will continue to showcase some of Australia’s most sustainable homes to the public as millions of Australians continue to embrace renewable energy, recycling, and other practices suitable to their lifestyles.

Houses are open for FREE between 10am and 4pm.

This year over 300 homes will open their doors for tours and give visitors opportunities to see firsthand the benefits and practicality of solar, ventilation, water harvesting, recycling, shading, thermal mass (materials that absorb and release heat), glazing and window treatments, gardens, and lifestyle products. Architects, builders and specialist service providers will also be on hand at many of the homes to provide expert tips.
