Sustainability Drinks Melbourne is pleased to have Abigail Forsyth as guest speaker for Sustainability Drinks on the 7th of December.

Entrepreneur and mother of two, co-creator and founder of KeepCup, Abigail Forsyth has always been a passionate problem solver. Abigail’s leadership and devotion to finding creative solutions to overcome our impact on the environment has changed the way even the most discerning coffee drinkers enjoy their daily dose and she has since been commended in several globally renowned awards. She was a finalist in the City of London’s Sustainable City Awards (2010), Premier’s Design Awards (2010) and Melbourne Day awards (2010), as well as being shortlisted for the Australian International Design Awards (2010) and the Red Dot Industrial Design Awards Hamburg (2010).

Bruce Jeffreys is on a mission to transform our cities by reducing the number of cars on our local streets. With Nic Lowe, Bruce co-founded GoGet CarShare , Australia’s first car sharing program that today is the world’s fastest growing scheme. Operating across Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, GoGet has 15,000 members sharing 600 vehicles via a 24/7 smart-card enabled booking and access system. GoGet has pioneered a major shift in attitudes to private car ownership in Australia and re-shaped local transport and planning policies. In 2010 GoGet was named the 27th fastest growing private company in Australia (BRW Fast 100) and was a founding member of the International Car Sharing Association.

Danny Williams is the founder of ProGreen Biofuels which is a subsidiary of “Renewable Energy & Biofuels Limited (REBL)”. ProGreen Biofuels is an Australian company focused on providing Australians with fuel security and a renewable option for a healthy future economic environment.

ProGreen Biofuels has invested many years in researching and studying the use of biofuels accross a number of industries. Compiling a wealth of data and with the aid of ProGreen’s unique Research & Development facility, ProGreen has proven techniques and process that has resulted in Australia’s finest Premium quality Biofuels and is developing a national distribution network with high emphasis on remote Australia using local feed stock.

EcoStore Founder @ Melbourne Sustainability Drinks

Malcolm Rands is the Founder and CEO of Ecostore Company Limited. Since 1994, ecostore have researched and brought to market NZ’s leading range of healthy, eco friendlier household cleaners, body care, pet care and organic gardening products. Products that look after the health of the users as well as the planet. ecostore products are now available in all supermarkets and health stores throughout NZ, as well as in over 1000 supermarkets in Australia, outlets in Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, the UK, and supermarket chains in the USA including 150 stores on Manhattan Island NYC. ecostore is currently a Deloitte Fast 50 company and was the 2009 NZ Sustainable Business of the Year.

Malcolm has been awarded the Green Ribbon Award from the Ministry for the Environment, plus two environmental awards from the Auckland Regional Council. Known for two years as the weekly “ecoman’ on TV1’s Good Morning Show, he gave advice on how to ‘green up’ your life. He continues to be a frequent media commentator and regular radio guest on both sides of the Tasman. Malcolm has been added to the World Class NZ international network and is the chair of the Fairground Foundation the sister not for profit organisation of ecostore.

Having been active in the sustainable scene for over 25 years, Malcolm co-founded NZ’s first permaculture eco-village in 1986, and was a foundation member of the sustainable business network. Malcolm will be sharing the key events and motivations in his journey so far, mistakes made and what not to do! He will also share his insights into when the public will buy into the sustainability journey!

Our May guest speaker is Richard Gilmore. Richard joined Earthwatch in 2007 firstly as Operations and Programs Director and was appointed Executive Director that same year. Earthwatch is a not-for-profit environmental organisation which engages people in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. Following an Earthwatch two-week volunteer expedition to Kenya, Richard started on a journey of self-awareness that would lead to him becoming CEO of Earthwatch in just 2 years. Richard will provide a personal account of his journey and add his insights as to why people are aware of the many challenges we face, but what it is that holds us back from personal action. He will also describe how Earthwatch is responding to the changing learning needs of the corporate sector, with the development of field-based immersive learning programs for sustainability leaders.

This event provides an opportunity to meet other people interested in creating a more sustainable world, exchange ideas and hear different perspectives about the social and environmental challenges we face. Come and meet a wide range of passionate people who are interested in making a positive difference.  It is non-sponsored (ie: you buy your own drinks!) and the atmosphere enables people to introduce themselves and feel comfortable with meeting new people and exchanging ideas. Brad Krauskopf is the Co-founder and Executive Director of Hub Melbourne.  Brad is an entrepreneur who has worked, lived and studied in Australia, Spain, USA and South America. His passion is innovating new business models that can scale social and environmental impact. He also serves as a micro-trustee of Awesome Foundation Melbourne and is on the advisory team for RMIT’s Social Entrepreneurship program (SEEDs).

The Hub is an incubator for social innovation that offers membership of inspirational habitats in major world cities for social innovators to work, meet, learn, connect and realise progressive ideas. The Hub is a global community of people from every profession, background and culture working at ‘new frontiers’ to tackle the world’s most pressing social, cultural and environmental challenges.

Brad will present on changing the face of work through collaboration, diversity and innovation.

Our next Sustainability Drinks event is on Wednesday 2nd February 2011.

Sean Willmore was a Victorian park ranger, now documentary maker, festival director, author and Director of The Thin Green Line, a foundation that supports the families of Park rangers killed, and prevents further ranger deaths, on the frontline of conservation around the world.

The Thin Green Line Foundation’s mission is to share the stories of park rangers from around the world and in doing so support conservation projects and the families of rangers killed, whilst protecting wildlife, in their selfless fight for conservation globally.

Sean will talk about how to stay sane and proactive in the environmental movement based on his experiences with The Thin Green Line, with much expectation, little funding, the challenges of bureaucracy and a constant need for hope. Why should we keep going?

Wilderness Society at Melbourne Sustainability Drinks

Luke Chamberlain is The Wilderness Society’s Victorian Forest Campaigner. Luke’s role is to educate the public about the role that forest and ecosystems play in the international carbon cycle and to advocate for the protection of these critical natural systems. Luke works at all levels of government to advocate for the correct accounting of forest ecosystems in Australia’s national carbon accounts.

The Wilderness Society is a national, community-based, environmental advocacy organisation whose purpose is to protect, promote and restore wilderness and natural processes across Australia for the survival and ongoing evolution.

Luke will talk about the value of nature in economic terms, and the opportunities that we have in Victoria to reframe our view of nature rather than as something to exploit or own. He will provide international examples of where this is occurring, and how the overall benefit is much greater than the economic benefit of exploitation.

Melbourne Sustainability Drinks has become one of Melbourne’s most highly regarded and successful monthly events. An open invitation is extended to all who are “passionate about sustainability”!  Our October guest speaker is Mark Ogge, Director of Beyond Zero Emissions. Mark is the initiator and key organiser of the Zero Carbon Australia project, and has implemented many of the projects that have shaped the organisation helping to make Beyond Zero Emissions one of the leading climate and energy solutions organisations in Australia.  The October door prize is kindly sponsored by Neco.
