24 Hours of Reality
24 Presenters. 24 Time Zones. 13 Languages. 1 Message. 24 Hours of Reality is a worldwide event to broadcast the reality of the climate crisis. It will consist of a new multimedia presentation created by Al Gore and delivered once per hour for 24 hours, representing every time zone around the globe. Each hour people living with the reality of climate change will connect the dots between recent extreme weather events — including floods, droughts and storms — and the manmade pollution that is changing our climate. We will offer a round-the-clock, round-the-globe snapshot of the climate crisis in real time. The deniers may have millions of dollars to spend, but we have a powerful advantage. We have reality.
24 Hours of Reality will be broadcast live online from September 14 to 15, over 24 hours, representing 24 time zones and 13 languages.
From Tonga to Cape Verde, Mexico City to Alaska, Jakarta to London, people living with the impacts of climate change every day will tell their story. You can experience as much as you like without even leaving your home. Click here to find the location — or locations — where you would like to watch a presentation. Due to logistical considerations, three of the presentations will be broadcast remotely from New York — Tonga, the Solomon Islands and French Polynesia — but will include local footage and information. All other presentations will be filmed on location around the world. In Australia, people will congregate in each State and Territory to watch the Australian element of the event unfold. Click the link below to find out more about the event, and how you can hold your own viewing party or join another.

The Future of the Electricity Network in Australia
Posted in Events by Kate Archdeacon on August 23rd, 2011
| 24 August , 2011 | ||
| 6:30 pm | to | 8:00 pm |
Effective and efficient transmission of electric power from generators to consumers is a vital part of the electricity system. Australia’s national transmission network is the longest AC system in the world, extending 5000km from Queensland to Tasmania to Port Augusta, supplying 19 million residents. As demand continues to grow and the penetration of renewables on the grid increases, the national transmission network will require significant extensions and upgrades. But what is the optimal design to support a very different energy system in the 21st century? Variable and distributed generation and potential large storage systems (such as an electric vehicle fleet) make this a diabolical question that the panel of experts will address in detail.
Wednesday August 24, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM
Sidney Myer Asia Centre, Carrillo Gartner Theatre
Corner Swanston Street & Monash Road
The University of Melbourne

Melbourne Community Farmers Markets: August Highlights
There’s so much to tell that there’ll hardly be room to list all the fab winter produce happening around the markets this August. So just a quick wrap will see Ian Cuming and his kiwis at all four markets, Milawa Mustards starting at Veg Out this Saturday (and a one-off at Collingwood the following Saturday) and the new, improved Red Hill Cheese starting at Coal Creek Farmers’ Market in Korumburra with their range of sheep milk cheeses having moved their herd to the rolling hills of Moyarra. Then of course there’s citrus aplenty, fennel, artichokes, walnuts, pears, broccoli shoots, cime di rape, goat meat, daffodils and the last of the hot roasted chestnuts for the year. That’ll keep you busy in the kitchen…!

Local Harvest Website for Melbourne: Seeking Input
Posted in Models, Movements, Seeking by Kate Archdeacon on August 4th, 2011

There is a growing need for easy-to-use information for sourcing food locally.
Local Harvest will be a website resource focusing on food relocalisation and the promotion of alternatives for food production in an urban setting. This includes a national directory for finding food co-ops, food swap meets, community gardens, farmers markets, box systems, ‘pick your own’ farms, farm-gate products, organic retailers, seed saver networks, free-range meats, and more. Users can find alternative local food sources based on their own locality by placing in a postcode.
A second component will be the promotion and exploration of do-it-yourself alternatives for food production and meeting essential needs, including resources for growing your own food, making your own produce, storing and preserving, low energy living.
We will largely be drawing from the many existing resources, and collating them into one place. This idea is based on the one existing for the USA found at www.localharvest.org.
- Core objectives of the project are to help people move away from dependence on the supermarket and industrial food system, and support local producers, reduce transport distance and associated energy and carbon impact, and build up connections between urban consumers and rural producers.
- The target audience is initially city dwellers who are looking to minimise their impact regarding food choices. Ultimately however, it will be a useful resource for everyone who eats and is concerned about making a difference with their everyday purchasing choices.
- Additional components such as a forum and blog by producers and/ or users may be included to enhance the ‘community’ and resource sharing aspect. A companion to the website resource will be an iPhone and smart-phone app using the same data.
- Local Harvest will be comprehensive and user-friendly, and an effective tool in encouraging behaviour change in food choices.
Involvement
Let us know if you’d like to be involved in this project. Here’s some ideas.
- be part of the organising team
- help with funding
- tidying up the content
- contributing content (resources you know of in your area)
