Gross National Happiness (GNH) is Bhutan’s balanced development philosophy which seeks to integrate equitable and sustainable socio-economic development with environmental conservation, cultural promotion and good governance. In this forum Isabel Sebastian and Tim Fischer will provide an overview and update of work in Bhutan to implement the Gross National Happiness approach including implications for government policy making, business and community. They will also outline plans for the new Gross National Happiness Centre to be developed in Bumthang, Bhutan as a practical focus for exploring and learning about the principles and practice of GNH.
Isabel Sebastian is a member of the Prime Minister of Bhutan’s Advisory Committee assisting with program development for Bhutan’s GNH Centre. Isabel has more than 20 years international experience working with business, government and community organisations to promote and implement sustainable development and sustainable tourism policies and practice.
Tim Fischer AC is a former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia. In addition to his recently completed role as Australian Ambassador to the Vatican, Tim has an ongoing role as Australia’ Special Envoy to Bhutan. He is co-author, with Tshering Tashi of ‘Bold Bhutan Beckons’.
