Calling all Environmental Professionals:  your help is needed to provide detailed information on environmental career options. You don’t need to be an expert on environmental careers, you just need to know about your role and your career history and complete an online survey. This survey is a part of research being undertaken to document the range of professional environmental jobs across Australia, and identify the types of skills, knowledge and experience associated with these jobs. This information will be used to create a 2010 Australian Guide to Environmental Careers.  Since the last environmental job survey five years ago, the environmental sector has grown considerably. Detailed information on the impact this growth has had on breadth of jobs and careers within Australia is very limited.

This survey will ascertain the range of professional environmental or green jobs across Australia and identify skills and education requirements for, and basic tasks of, these roles. This information will be used to provide career advice and guidance to those wanting to work, and currently working, in the environmental sector.

The survey closes on November 30, 2009.

Green jobs – towards decent work in a sustainable, low-carbon world

Posted in Events by Devin Maeztri on April 3rd, 2009

What: Green jobs – towards decent work in a sustainable, low-carbon world
by Peter Poschen, Senior Advisor Sustainable Development and Climate Change, International Labour Organization (ILO)
When: Tuesday 7 April, 12noon-1pm
Where: Brotherhood, 67 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy – Father Tucker’s Room
To RSVP or to join the seminar mailing list please contact Kristine Philipp (kphilipp@ bsl.org.au)

‘Green jobs’ have become something of an emblem of a more sustainable economy and society that aims to preserve the environment for present and future generations and to be more equitable and inclusive of all people and countries. Green jobs hold the promise that human kind will be able to face up to the two defining challenges of the twenty-first century: averting dangerous climate change and environmental degradation and providing decent work and thus the prospect of well-being and dignity for all. This presentation will focus on green jobs for development. The concept of green jobs is even more relevant in the current economic crisis. The major investments made to overcome the crisis can become a unique opportunity to begin the shift towards more sustainable production systems and towards more social justice. Peter Poschen is Senior Advisor, Sustainable Development and Climate Change at the International Labour Organistion. He is currently responsible for the coordination of the ILOs Green Jobs Programme. He was originally trained as a forester and has a PhD on land-use systems in Ethiopia from the University of Freiburg. He has worked on sustainable development in over 20 countries for some 25 years.
