UNAA World Environment Day Awards 2012: Nominations Now Open

Each year, in support of United Nations World Environment Day (June 5), the United Nations Association of Australia recognises innovative and outstanding environmental initiatives and projects from across Australia through the World Environment Day Awards.  The Awards invite nominations from individuals, organisations and businesses that have taken positive steps towards sustainability and demonstrated environmental excellence in their homes, schools, communities and workplaces.

In 2012, the Awards are held in support of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for all and United Nations World Environment Day 2012 ‘Green Economy: Does it include you?’.

The 2012 Award Categories are:

  • Biodiversity Award
  • BHP Billiton Business Awards
  • Virgin Australia Community Award
  • Environmental School Award
  • Excellence in Marine and Coastal Management Award
  • Excellence in Sustainable Water Management Award
  • Green Building Award
  • Individual Award for Outstanding Service to the Environment
  • Local Government Awards
  • Media Award for Environmental Reporting
  • Peter Szental Award for Sustainability Entrepreneurship
  • Sustainability Education Award
  • Sustainability Leadership Awards

ENTRY DEADLINE: 5pm, Friday 4 May

Winners will be announced at the Awards Presentation Dinner to be held on Friday 8 June at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne.

Banksia Environmentalist of the Year: Open for Nominations

2011 Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year and 2011 Environment Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year Awards are open for entry to recognise an outstanding contribution to a Sustainable Australia. Self-nominations and nominations on behalf of another individual and organisations are accepted. Nominated individuals and organisations must have achieved outcomes that have: made a significant contribution to a Sustainable Australia influenced understanding or appreciation of sustainability, in Australia and/or overseas, and provided leadership or inspiration in the field of sustainability.

World Environment Day Awards: Call for Nominations

Nominations for the 2011 United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Awards are now open nationally. Businesses, local governments, community organisations, individuals, schools and the media are invited to nominate in the following Award categories:

  • WSP Lincolne Scott Sustainability Leadership Award
  • Peter Szental Award for Sustainability Entrepreneurship
  • Virgin Blue Business Awards
  • Department of Sustainability and Environment Biodiversity Award
  • Green Building Award
  • Local Government Awards
  • Excellence in Sustainable Water Management
  • Environmental Schools Award
  • Sustainability Education Award
  • Excellence in Marine and Coastal Management Award
  • Media Award for Environmental Reporting
  • Community Award
  • Individual Award

This National Awards Program recognises those from all Australian sectors who display innovation and dedication in their work to protect, manage or restore the environment. In recent years, the World Environment Day Awards have showcased some of the most important and exciting environmental projects in Australia. The Awards program encourages environmental leadership, and promotes awareness of environmental issues on a global scale. The Association is pleased to announce a new award this year, the Peter Szental Award for Sustainability Entrepreneurship. This Award recognises businesses that have been outstanding in commercialising new sustainability solutions, demonstrating new business models and influencing mainstream thinking. The World Environment Day Awards are held annually in support of UN World Environment Day on June 5th.

Nominations close Friday 6 May, 2011.

Winners will be announced at the Awards Presentation Dinner to be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Friday 3 June, 2011.

Nick Savaidis from Etiko Fair Trade presents at the Sustainable Cities Round Table

Nick Savaidis, Founder, Etiko Fair Trade presented at the recent Sustainable Cities Round Table on Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Innovation with a talk titled; “How Green Are Your Balls?“. Etiko Fair Trade was the Winner of the this year’s Premiers Sustainability Awards in the Small Business category and the Banksia Environmental Foundation Award for Business Sustainability and runners up in the United Nations World Environment Day Awards Triple Bottom Line category.
