We are looking for volunteers to grow and supply produce for the first Home Harvest Regional Feast. The feast will be held in Eltham (Victoria), so anyone who can get there is welcome to take part. Sign up as a grower and receive a free seasonal meal created using Grower’s produce at the feast. All registered growers will receive a small gift of vegetable seeds.
When: 22nd April, 2012
Where: Edendale, Gastons Road Eltham, Vic
Who: All growers are welcome, no matter what your level of experience or the size of your garden.

Come down to Eltham and celebrate sustainable living and everything green at Council’s Practically Green Festival this October!
First held in 2008 at Council’s Environmental Education Centre in Eltham – Edendale Farm – the Practically Green Festival continues in 2011 to offer practical and simple ideas to help you and your family live sustainably. The Festival showcases the very best in sustainable building technologies– all in a fun festival-style, family atmosphere. Come and enjoy the food, free children’s entertainment, music and free workshops!
As the Festival is all about sustainability, we encourage you to travel there sustainably too! Edendale Farm is conveniently located on the Diamond Creek Trail and is just a short walk from Eltham train station. Think about jumping on your bike, catching the shuttle bus from Eltham station or popping your walking shoes on – and come and experience the Practically Green Festival!

Is Insulation the answer to energy efficiency? Has the approach since 2003 been a success? Are 5 Star homes really that good? What about thermal mass and good design? We have had difficulty understanding why computers don’t like earth buildings. Some high profile academics also have concerns with NatHers. How can you build an energy efficient earth home? How can you build a Bushfire safe home? What is the best material in flame zone construction? What about fire bunkers? How to use earth in ways you never dreamed of revealed in a day of workshops? Get your hands dirty! Conference speakers are still being confirmed, but the focus areas will be: – Affordable housing – Flame zone and bunkers – Challenging bunker regulations – Forum: energy efficient earth houses – Workshops including Building a fire bunker Soil & brick Testing Brick production – Guest speaker dinner, Saturday night at Montsalvat.

Join Rory Fort, to discuss using, re-using and cleaning our precious water when it is dirty. Rory will talk about these things and answer your questions about what works, what doesn’t work, what works well, and why. Rory Fort is an inventor and sustainability enthusiast. Over the years he has built Earth Sheltered houses, designed clever gizmos and worked out how to do more with less. He is currently best known as a designer of the super-efficient “Root Zone” system of waste-water reuse and an expert Green Plumber.

The Conversations About Living Sustainably series invites community discussion on issues of environmental solutions, local food production and community resilience. All conversations are held at the ELTHAM College Professional Learning Centre, 1660 Main Road, Research.
