CERES Community Environment Park is seeking a Green Technologies Manager.

Green technology has been a source of inspiration and wonder at CERES since its earliest years. Its products form the basis for many of the displays and educational programs at CERES. In the early 1980s CERES had an intensive worm-farming and composting program. It had the latest in energy saving designs and technologies in the Low Energy House. It had a water management master plan aimed at collecting and storing water from roads and rooves. And it helped organize the first kerb-side waste collection pilot scheme for Melbourne.
Since those times the breadth of green technologies has continued expanding – embracing renewable energy production (PVs and wind), energy conservation, water harvesting and distribution, waste management and recycling (including composting and worm farming), organic agriculture (including aquaponics in recent times), sustainable building design and construction, and alternative transport (bikes and electric vehicles). Most recently CERES green technology work has focused on solutions to climate change – including exploring solutions in developing countries (in conjunction with CERES Global annual trips to India and Indonesia).

CERES Urban Orchard

The Urban Orchard project was the first of its kind in Australia established in 2004 at the Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies (CERES),Brunswick East. The project initially focused on utilising unused fruit from the abundant plantings across the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne, and has since spread to swapping vegetables, herbs and beyond. Participants come from over 180 households ranging from a variety of age groups, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
The model has no membership fees and relies on minimal volunteer support. People enjoy volunteering by sitting at the swap table at the market where they can meet their neighbours and like-minded others where food acts as a point of convergence. The Urban Orchard project extends from sharing with neighbours to sharing with the local community, it endorses an ethos of self-reliance and reflects the seasons and the whole cycle of food. It is also free and organic, making normally expensive organic food accessible for those on a budget. Since 2004, new Urban Orchard groups have been established in Yarra, Footscray, Bentleigh, Coburg and Apollo Bay in Victoria, on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, and in Adelaide in South Australia.

CERES Spring Workshops – September to November

As the weather warms up and blossoms start to appear, CERES is readying for another season of workshops. There are some new additions including mozzarella cheesemaking, water wise homes and indian cooking. A one day workshop Future Scenarios and Solutions using current work by David Holmgren, on planning for Peak Oil and Climate Change targeted at professionals, planners and decision makers in government and the private sector.
David Holmgren (born 1955) is an ecologist, ecological design engineer and writer. He is perhaps most well known as co-originator of the permaculture concept with Bill Mollison. He has been conducting workshops and courses in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, South and Central America, Japan and North America. His environmental principles have exerted a global influence.
