CERES is advertising several positions at the moment notably the Café Co Manager and the Market Manger (see position descriptions below), and also a 2 day a week gardening position (soon to be advertised), and a one day per week book keeping / accountant. Position Descriptions

CERES Organic Market Manager
Background to CERES
CERES is an environmental community organisation in East Brunswick, Melbourne. CERES is located on 4 hectares of land on the banks of the Merri Creek and has become an icon of locally based education and action on environmental and social-justice issues.

Projects encompassed within CERES include local and community projects (eg, Community Gardens and Chook Group, Bicycle Users Group, Bread- making Group), educational programs for schools (both environmental and cultural ), accredited training and work-experience programs, non-profit income generating programs (café and nursery), recreational activities and courses for adults and children, celebratory festivals ( including the Kingfisher Festival, Harvest Festival ) and a volunteer program.

CERES projects and staff are organized into 4 Teams: Education and Training Team, Habitat Team, Community and Governance Team and the Enterprise Team. Supporting the day to day running and management of staff within the teams are Area Managers who comprise the Managers Working Group. There are 4 Team Leaders, working across each of the 4 teams and who are ultimately accountable to the CERES Management Committee.

Background to and Aim of the Position
CERES Organic Market, now in its 8th year, is a vibrant outdoor marketplace and the centre of CERES farms many exciting projects. It supports locally grown organic produce and provides a venue to meet, talk and relax with people from the neighbourhood. CERES Organic Market plays a key part in a local food network sourcing food grown either in CERES own inner city market gardens or from Victorian farmers before buying from interstate. The market, open twice a week 9am-1pm, also supplies fresh local produce each week to the CERES Café and to several food co-operatives in the wider community. Our fabulous Shoppe also opens during market trading hours and provides fantastic bulk whole foods, dairy products, household items and body products. Local breads, coffee and pastries, and the Craft Market are all part of a day at CERES market. The popular Urban Orchard Project, which runs alongside the market, is an Australian first where some 140 households bring their excess home grown fruit and veg to a booth at CERES Market to swap with their neighbours.

The Aim of this position is as follows:
To work within the CERES vision and strategic planning objectives
To manage the Market in all facets of its operation.
To achieve or better the projected budgetary target set each year.
To actively develop and pursue new initiatives relevant to either the market or CERES in accordance to CERES vision.

Duties and Responsibilities
Manage market staff
¶ Roster setting
¶ Personnel management
¶ Duty allocation
¶ Training
¶ Liaise between CERES management and market staff to ensure appropriate flow of information
¶ Ensure appropriate wage levels

To be responsible for the operations of the market
¶ Ordering, purchasing and pricing all produce
¶ Invoicing and cash management
¶ Internal and external sales to Café and co-ops
¶ Set up, running and pack down of Saturday market
¶ Support the Shoppe Manager and Shoppe duties
¶ Maintain financial records
¶ Attend monthly budget meetings

Maintain and Develop the market
¶ Co-ordinate marketing and promotion
¶ Initiate and co-ordinate new policy development and implementation with market staff
¶ Manage public inquiries and administration tasks
¶ Manage the market budget and financial accountability in consultation with the Farm Area Manager and the Accountant.

Participate in Whole-of-CERES Management
¶ Work within and promote the principles and aims of CERES
¶ Represent both CERES and the Market to the wider community
¶ Participate in Management meetings and CERES-wide forums

Collaborate with Farm and Training Managers
¶ Support and collaborate with the market team comprising of Wednesday Manager, Shoppe Manager, co-op worker and craft market co-ordinator.
¶ Attend weekly farm team meetings and collaborate with all members of the farm team
¶ To be involved in coordinating and working with volunteers, trainees and students in addition to market staff

OHS
¶ All staff are expected to be aware of OHS risks associated with their area of work and take responsibility for ensuring their own safety, and that of fellow workers
¶ Staff should report OHS concerns to the CERES Farm OHS Officer
¶ Staff should work with the OHS Officer to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment is maintained.

Period of Appointment
The position is a permanent part-time position, with a three month review following initial appointment.

Accountability
This position sits within the Farm Team, reporting to the Farm Area Manager and is ultimately accountable to the CERES Management Committee.

Staff Reviews are held annually.
Skills, Experience, and Qualities Important to Position (Selection Criteria)

The successful applicant will have demonstrated and proven experience and abilities in the following:
¶ Managerial skills – both people and budgets
¶ Working in a collaborative way, preferably in a community organisation or similar setting
¶ Interest and commitment to local seasonal food, Organic and Biodynamic Agriculture and environmentally sustainable development principles
¶ A good understanding of the Sustainable Agricultural industry
¶ An active role in the Sustainable Agricultural field, with demonstrated experience in growing and understanding fresh produce
¶ Customer service skills of a high level
¶ Organised, efficient and energetic
¶ Be a motivated team leader and member
¶ Experience in marketing principles
¶ Hold a current Victorian Drivers License

Hours of Work, Salary and Conditions
This position is approximately 33 hours per week, from Tuesday to Thursday and running the day on Saturday. This includes one 11 hour day each Thursday from 4.30am to take care of early morning wholesale purchasing and subsequent responsibilities. Hours worked before 6am and all hours on weekends are entitled to 1/6th CERES loading.

This position begins at Level 9 Band 1 in the CERES Wage Model ($24.55 per hour) to be reviewed at 6-12 monthly intervals. Further conditions are described in the Standard Work Agreement and CERES Human Resource Policy.

Position Description

Café co-manager

1. Background to CERES

2. Background to and Aim of the Position
To work within the CERES vision and strategic planning objectives as one of two Café managers. The Café Managers shall be responsible for the café as a whole and will use a Triple Bottom Line approach to all decision making. All staffing, financial decision making and reporting, café planning, customer service, safe food handling, cleaning and strategic planning are the responsibility of the Café Manager team.

3. Duties and Responsibilities

B. General Cafe
¶ As one of a team of two co-managers, monitoring all aspects of the café as a whole.
¶ Providing support and assistance to the Kitchen Manager.
¶ Day to day staffing
¶ General customer service, cash handling, register reconciliation, cleaning & all general café duties
¶ Working with the kitchen manager to oversee food presentation and portion control from the kitchen
¶ Training and overseeing staff in food presentation, coffee making and customer service
¶ Training and overseeing staff in the Food Safety Plan and Responsibly Service of Alcohol.
¶ Stock control, ordering and shopping and their associated budget implications.
¶ Be aware of, and take into consideration, Environmental, Financial and Social issues when making decisions (triple bottom line accounting)
¶ Attending to day to day issues as they arise
¶ Organising and managing of evening and daytime functions.
C. Financial
¶ Daily cash register reconciliation, cash register balancing, cash security.
¶ Attending monthly budget meetings
¶ Being aware of the budget and financial figures on a daily basis and reacting accordingly regarding stock ordering, staffing and other expenditures.
¶ Ongoing financial reporting, including finance recording, financial meetings, financial decision making, budget setting, purchasing, staffing and all the financial budget implications.
D. Staffing
¶ On an ongoing basis, promoting a strong team environment across all of the café areas.
¶ Supporting café staff on a daily basis
¶ Attending and organising regular staff meetings.
¶ Interviewing, hiring and firing of cafe staff.
¶ Handling any arising staff complaints and issues
¶ Staff training, support and supervising
E. CERES and CERES Cafe
¶ With the other Café co-manager & Kitchen manager, develop and revisit future planning and development to better the café as a business
¶ Attend general CERES meetings and gatherings when required
¶ Be aware of the CERES Strategic plan
Period of Appointment
The Café Co-manager position begins as a 3 month appointment, with a review following, at which time the position may open up to a permanent part time position.

Accountability
This position sits within the Café Team, reporting to the Enterprise Team Leader and Financial Team, and reports to these positions. The position also requires a close working relationship with the Kitchen Manager. Staff and Area Reviews are held annually.

6. Skills, Experience & Qualities Important to Position (Selection Criteria)
¶ High level of cafe experience, including barista experience, food safety, food preparation and responsible service of alcohol.
¶ The desire to work in a cohesive, helpful and friendly team environment
¶ Previous management experience
¶ An understanding of costing and budgeting
¶ Knowledge of seasonal organic produce
¶ Knowledge of Australian Bush foods
¶ Knowledge of contemporary Social and Environmental issues

7. Hours of Work, Salary and Conditions
This position is 4 x 8 hour days per week including weekend and occasional evening work.

Normal day-time work days are 8 hours long anywhere between 7am – 7pm with a half hour (paid) break.

This position begins at Level 9 Band 1 in the CERES Wage Model, ($23.75 per hour Mon-Fri, $27.71 Saturday and Sunday) to be reviewed at 12 monthly intervals.

Other conditions are described in the Standard Work Agreement and CERES Human Resource Policy.
