Australia’s largest desalination plant is under construction at Wonthaggi. It has been criticised for many things including its use of coal-generated electricity, a $10 million payout of taxpayers money to the failed bidder, and a range of serious and long term environmental impacts. Major financial backers of the project, Westpac and National Australia Bank, have adopted the “Equator Principles” which outline strict guidelines regarding investment in un-sustainable projects. Watershed Victoria have organised a campaign to inform the banks via their customers of these discrepancies.
