Smart Living Centre, Ballarat

Posted in Movements by Kate Archdeacon on January 3rd, 2011

From Bridget O’Sullivan’s Smart Blogging:

Opening in 2011, Smart Living Ballarat will be located in a shop front in the heart of Ballarat in Lydiard Street, within the Mining Exchange, together with community hubs in Buninyong, Wendouree and Delacombe. It will provide a one-stop shop for people seeking information on smart living practices.

Our goal is to make this place of inspiration and advice about smarter ways to live, build, travel or even eat! Already the City of Ballarat, Conergy and Datacall Technologies have installed a 4kw solar system on the roof of the Mining Exchange together with a datalogger in the Smart Living Centre itself to show people the energy being produced. We hope that this will provide great information for people considering installing a solar system on their own home.

We are very keen to connect people who come to the centre to local businesses, community groups or other residents who are able to help them take the next step. We know there is an huge range of experience and expertise in our community and we want to tap into that – the potential is enormous.

Currently an empty shell, one of our first tasks is to complete the refurbishment of the shop front, so we are seeking advice and assistance from locals. One of the goals of the centre is to give people examples of how they can build or renovate their homes using sustainable building practices and materials. Using these types of materials in the fit-out of the centre itself is a great way to do this. The City of Ballarat has provided salvaged timber flooring, but we are looking for other materials to complete the job. If we can source these locally, even better! So if you are involved in a local business who might be interested in working with us on this project, we would love to hear from you.

Anyone interested in being involved can contact BREAZE office on 53291730 or email
