FEDERATION SQUARE

Last year Melbournes Walk was the worlds biggest climate change rally.

Two months later, Australia ratified the Kyoto Protocol.

Now, we need your help again as the future of our planet hangs in the balance

WALK AGAINST WARMING is Australia’s community day of action on climate change. It is a unique opportunity for all Australians who are concerned about climate change to show their concern in a way that has real impact and makes a difference.

Last year, record numbers of Victorians from all walks of life joined Environment Victoria to make the 2007 Walk Against Warming the world’s biggest ever climate change rally. Two weeks later, we had a new federal government, elected on the back of a surging green vote.

A month after that Australia finally ratified the Kyoto Protocol. The Walk was a resounding success.

This year the need for action is even greater. Our leaders may finally be talking the talk, but they are definitely not walking the Walk.

WHAT IS THE WALK AGAINST WARMING?

On Saturday, 15 November, 2008, the Walk Against Warming will again take place in Melbourne and Sydney. Tens of thousands of Victorians will join us here in Melbourne to demand real and immediate action against climate change.

By walking against warming, you can help us remind the decision makers that the climate crisis facing us all is URGENT.

Together we can let them know that we want them to take real and immediate action to prevent the worst climate change scenarios from coming true.

We’ll start at Federation Square, where we’ll be hearing from inspiring speakers before making our way to Parliament House amidst music and festivities. Once at Parliament House, we’ll engage in peaceful mass action to send a clear message to state and federal governments that we want real action against climate change to protect current and future generations.

Consider that millions of people around the world are already experiencing the dangerous effects of climate change. Without serious and immediate reduction in our greenhouse emissions, the global effects will be irreversible. Although we have missed our chance to prevent it altogether, a window of opportunity still exists to stop it from becoming catastrophic.

Please Walk with us this year and help us once again secure real action on climate change.

The Walk Against Warming is organised by Environment Victoria, in partnership with Victoria’s Climate Action Groups, Greenpeace Australia-Pacific and Make Poverty History.
