Launch of the World Sustainable Building Conference Melbourne
On May 21, over 100 people from a diverse range of backgrounds in the building industry attended the Melbourne launch of the 2008 World Sustainable Building Conference, organised by the Melbourne Forum.

The Sustainable Building conference series is the world’s premier conference dealing with whole-of-life delivery, management and performance of our built environment. Run once every three years after a highly competitive bidding process between the world’s leading cities, the 2008 conference will take place between the 21st and 25th of September at the Melbourne Convention Centre. The Melbourne conference aims to engage participants from a wide range of professional, academic and industry backgrounds in developing liveable, viable and connected built environments.

At the Launch, Professor Iwamura Kazuo of the Musashi Institute of Technology, in Yokohama, Japan, and Dr. Greg Foliente, co-chair of the 2008 World Sustainable Building Conference and CSIRO Science Leader, gave the audience a taste of what to expect from the Melbourne conference next year.

“The World Sustainable Building conference series is presented at various levels” says Dr. Foliente. “It will get people looking at the picture more broadly and give industry an opportunity to hear and think about the trends, technologies and philosophies that are being developed or applied internationally.”

A key feature of the 2008 conference is the expansion of the traditional academic basis of the conference to include an industry stream focussed on engaging business and stakeholders in the property industry in green building initiatives. This is the first time such an initiative has been undertaken in the sustainable building conference series.

To develop an industry stream that capitalizes on the presence of this international forum in Melbourne and produces concrete results for the building industry in Australia and overseas the Green Building Council of Australia has formed a partnership with the World Green Building Council and a number of key Australian industry associations. We are currently working with these organisations in developing the themes and programs of the industry stream.

The feedback from participants at the launch so far has been excellent, with many people expressing their enthusiasm to see what is coming up next as the industry stream begins to take shape over the next few months.
