Explore your creativity and learn how easy it is to be fashionably green at RMIT University’s inaugural sustainability festival and conference day, Commune@RMIT Brunswick, on Wednesday, 18 May.

Commune@RMIT Brunswick will feature speakers, creative workshops and exciting market stalls selling textiles, crafts, reworked garments and Fairtrade products, as well as organic and vegan food. Other activities will include a clothes and fabric swap, bike repair workshops and “Conversations over Tea Cosies”, a community project led by RMIT students that found novel uses for old jumpers.  Keith Cowlishaw, Head of RMIT’s School of Fashion and Textiles, said the event would engage students, staff and the community around Slow Craft and Design, local and global collaboration, and holistic approaches to creative practice. “This event is an opportunity for students and staff to come together with industry and the community to share and explore sustainability practice,” he said.

Popular Sydney based artist and director of Cloth Fabric, Julie Paterson, will conduct hands-on creative workshops at the festival. Other workshops will include heat transfer dyeing, Green Futuring, Zero-waste children’s clothing demonstrations and a Deconstruction/Reconstruction clothing workshop.  Festival guests will include Peppermint Magazine, Zero Carbon Moreland and Ethical Clothing Australia, with speakers including Cecilia Granadino (MINKA Fair Trade), Grace McQuilten (The Social Studio), Georgia McCorkill (The Red Carpet Project) and Swedish fashion “hacktivist”, Otto von Busch.

Patricia Brien, Creative Producer of Commune@RMIT Brunswick said: “Creativity is essential in commanding a more sustainable fashion and textiles industry, but by actively engaging with our local and global communities, our intention is to make change happen together.”
