A review of this week’s excellent events! Ethical shopping and polar bears!

Posted in Events by Ferne Edwards on September 12th, 2008

This week I attended two quite remarkable events – both of which everyone can still participate in. The first was the Friends of the Earth (FoE) information night about the Eco-Market model. The concept behind this model is that the Eco-Market would sell the equivalent types of products (obviously not the same amount) that a normal supermarket does but every single item would meet the FoE sustainability criteria. This includes considering aspects of social sustainability – as demonstrated by the placement of the Eco-Market in schools! For more information about this developing concept visit http://www.foe.org.au/sustainable-food/.

The second outstanding event launched last night is the Heat and Climate Change Exhibition at RMIT University. Opened by senator Bob Brown and RMIT’s Vice Chancellor, this exhibition has a high quality of paintings, photographs, installation pieces and more which are displayed beautifully in the RMIT gallery. This exhibition will be open for another month (from 12 September to 18 October) and I highly recommend people to make the effort to drop by and see the work. I mean, where else do you get to see two stuffed polar bears?!!!! Click here for more details about the event.

I encourage others to also write in about their experiences in the world of sustainability in Melbourne to share with others. To do this go to SustainableMelbourne.com and click on “Contribute a post” at the top of the screen.
