Posted in Events, Models, Visions by Ferne Edwards on March 4th, 2008

The three projects are the extension of the Metro lines, the new library in the Faculty of Architecture (PUC), and the Centro Cultural Palacio de La Moneda. The presentation is based on a series of observations collected over three weeks of ‘walking the city’ and will touch on public transport as an urban issue.

Comments on bicycling in Melbourne
Posted in Policies by Ferne Edwards on March 4th, 2008
The section below is republished with permission from the Going Solar Transport Newsletter #47, 4 March 2008, compiled by Stephen Ingrouille. Going Solar, www.goingsolar.com.au/transport. This newsletter provides an excellent commentary on local sustainable transport issues in Melbourne.
Cycling and the Victoria Government
“Bikes help relieve congestion on the roads and on public transport - they should be the greatest friend to the roads and public transport ministers. It’s not just the verbal support that is lacking for bikes in Melbourne, which is losing ground as one of the world’s most liveable cities. Few dollars are being spent by the State Government encouraging bike use. Anyone who has visited Brussels, Amsterdam or Copenhagen recently would know Melbourne’s bike network is rudimentary at best.”

Drive-to-Work Day
“It would be a suitable response to the recent anti-cyclist hoo-ha if the 70,000 Melburnians who cycle each day were to organise a Bike Free Day. They would just need to agree to drive a car to work instead of cycling, thereby claiming an extra 1000 kilometres or so of road space during peak hours. The effect on traffic congestion would be quite noticeable, one would think.”

Posted in Events, Movements by Ferne Edwards on March 3rd, 2008
Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.
This simple act has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world. As a result, at 8pm March 29, 2008 millions of people in some of the world’s major capital cities, including Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tel Aviv will unite and switch off for Earth Hour.
To find out what you can do visit the Earth Hour website at http://www.earthhour.org/.
