Model - The Westgarth Fruit and Vegie Collective’s User Manual
Posted in Models by Ferne Edwards on August 10th, 2007
One of the goals of Sustainable Melbourne is to provide people and organisations with proven models that they can replicate and extend to further urban sustainability here in Melbourne - and elsewhere! Elizabeth Wheeler from the Westgarth Fruit and Vegie Collective has kindly provided us with such a model - the User Manual for their Fruit and Vegie Collective - which demonstrates the process and different roles needed to maintain their community-run, organic food coop. The document is listed below for you to download for free.

Event - 14 August closing date for BPN Sustainability Awards
Posted in Events, Movements, Seeking by Ferne Edwards on August 9th, 2007
It’s your last chance to enter the inaugural BPN Environ Sustainability Awards.
These unique awards recognise and reward excellence in environmental design and construction in Australia’s building industry. A recent UN report found that buildings account for 30 to 40 per cent of global energy use. BPN and Environ encourage innovation and design expertise that will make our buildings more sustainable.
There is already a tremendous amount of excellent work being done in this regard. We invite companies and individuals to enter building projects which are examples of environmentally sustainable design. Both the builder and the architect will be acknowledged if their project is the winner.
The projects should have been completed in Australia between 30 June 2006 and 30 June 2007. There are eight categories: Large scale commercial; Small commercial; High density residential; Medium density residential; Low density residential; Single dwelling; Office fitouts; Public buildings.
The deadline for entries is 14 August 2007.
An awards ceremony will be held on 1 November 2007 at The Tearooms in Sydney’s Queen Victoria Building, where the winning teams will be given the opportunity to present their project to a distinguished audience.

The last session for the Sustainable Cities Round Table was a brainstorming discussion on the topic of ‘Creating a carbon neutral community with the lights on’, presented by Derek Klau, VicUrban and facilitated by Chris Ryan, ACSIS. This discussion was based on VicUrban’s “Officer” project and explored ways by brainstorming with the audience about how the suburb of Officer could become more sustainable both in planning and over time. The post, http://www.sustainablemelbourne.com/?p=255, outlines the outcomes of this discussion and also invites more responses to the various points to be added to this website.
